Nextcloud powering the digital workspace of tomorrow - 2024 in review

We at Nextcloud have remained true to our vision: empowering collaboration without compromising on privacy. This year has been a testament to that commitment. Together with the passion of our global team and the support of our community we have not just build the best open-source collaboration tools, but expanded our dedication to open source itself.

In this annual wrap-up, we want to take a moment to celebrate this year’s achievements. Join us as we continue to reimagine what’s possible – shaping a world where open source, privacy and connection come together and drive progress for the greater good.

~ Nextcloud team

Charting global growth

Nextcloud is used around the world by private individuals, communities, enterprises, and governments. In 2024, millions of new users gained access through hundreds of new enterprise customers. In the wider community, exact numbers are difficult to come by but there are some 400-500K servers online and this number also continues to grow steadily, with tens of thousands of new deployments across the globe from the US to France, from Australia to Indonesia and South Africa to Hawaii.

These numbers convert in the change Nextcloud brings about, contributing to a more connected, privacy-respecting, transparent, and safer digital world – where we interact with government services, access our education, cast votes in elections, fill forms on websites and call our colleagues and friends through video chat.

Change starts with people

This year, our team has grown significantly, reflecting our success. With 20% increase in size we are now 118 strong united by a shared vision across 23 countries. That includes 7 working students who get a chance to learn the ropes at Nextcloud. While we have expanded into a bigger office space in Berlin, we remain proudly remote-first, reflecting the flexibility and global collaboration that define our culture.

Shaping collaboration of tomorrow with Nextcloud Hub

The efficient Nextcloud Hub 8

Launching Nextcloud Hub 8 under the “Regain control over your time” theme, we made it all about efficiency. With Nextcloud Assistant 2.0 bringing innovative AI features, interactive widgets connecting our apps further, advancing chat and sharing tools and ambitious architecture undertakings, this release gave you more control than ever before.

The connected Nextcloud Hub 9

Our latest release brought a major visual redesign to the platform, resulting in a slicker experience all around. But it’s not all about the looks – with a growing stack of federation features, automation centralizing under Nextcloud Flow, and further efforts to elevate performance and scaling, Nextcloud Hub 9 made headlines this September as an “Explosive release”.

Nextcloud Talk: the open-source answer to Teams

In an unrestful world of today, dependency on centralized, opaque systems under strong foreign influence is a ticking clock. It is time the open-source world had a real answer to Microsoft Teams. Nextcloud Talk is the only open-source conferencing hub that seamlessly integrates chats, video meetings and webinar functionality in one powerful, privacy-respecting platform.

We are wrapping up 2024 with a strong standalone release of Nextcloud Talk, celebrating its reinvention within Nextcloud’s product portfolio. New desktop application, new AI features, new streaming capabilities, simplified and mindful collaboration, and reinforced security (again!) – we invite you to meet the new Nextcloud Talk.

Nextcloud Talk Hub 9

Standing ground against Big Tech

In an attempt to slow down the antitrust case backed by Nextcloud and other members of the Coalition for level playing field, Microsoft has unbundled Teams from the Windows ecosystem. Such “malicious compliance” is one of the common instruments in the Big Tech arsenal used to resist the limiting market regulations. A legislation like EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) could protect fair competition further, once it targets Microsoft’s cloud products that squeeze numerous local providers from the market.

With this struggle still far from over, some results of our common efforts are evident. Earlier this year, Germany has officially recognized Microsoft as a tech giant and made it “subject to extended abuse control”, three years since the formal antitrust complaint.

When the global IT so evidently lacks digital sovereignty and resilience, we naturally consider the fight for a fair trade a part of our mission.

AI with ethical integrity

Like we said in one of the early introductions to our AI tools, some AI is hype and some is substance. And we want to give you the substance. Nextcloud does become a better version of itself with the evolving AI stack, helping you get some tasks done quicker.

The back-end, the UX, the features, and the models you can use to power up Nextcloud Assistant – this year our engineers and contributors have done work to be proud of. From context-aware features with Nextcloud Assistant 2.0 and chat UI and platform-wide integration in Nextcloud Hub 9 to new open-source AI models – you can enjoy a fully AI-powered workspace.

And most importantly, you stay in control of this powerful technology. To build the system that you can rely on and keep your data yours, you can refer to our Ethical AI Rating and decide what AI you want to use in Nextcloud Hub.

Nextcloud Ethical AI

Ready for mission-critical, enterprise deployment

Enterprise support for Roundcube

Since Roundcube joined us, Nextcloud began to receive requests from large hosting companies for support. In August Nextcloud introduced the first official offering of enterprise support for Roundcube! It is tailored specifically for mail providers running large instances with thousands to millions of end users. We also offer our services to help businesses, universities and the public sector, but our offering makes the most sense for larger installations.

Process automation at scale with Nextcloud Flow

Shortly before Nextcloud Hub 9, Nextcloud has presented the first automation-enabled open source platform for implementing the Online Access Act (Onlinezugangsgesetz, OZG) in Germany and similar use cases in other countries. The Nextcloud Flow toolbox provides administrations with a digitally sovereign tool for offering and automating public services online and for exchanging the underlying processes among themselves.

BITV 2.0 certified Nextcloud

Nextcloud Enterprise has been awarded a German BITV 2.0 certification that is based on WCAG 2.0 benchmark. This means that the enterprise and public sector users can be confident in the accessibility standards of Nextcloud. The platform is designed with all users’ needs in mind, suitable for people with limitations and requirements for non-standard input devices and additional measures like a screen reader. Contact your sales representative if you require the certification.

News talk: In the spotlight

  • Spanish newspaper El Espanol reported on the Nextcloud Community Conference.
  • German netzpolitik.org and others reported on the update regarding the complaint against Microsoft.
  • German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel published a bylined article by Frank Karlitschek on open source as a pioneer of digital sovereignty.
  • Weekly newspaper Die Zeit published an article on Microsoft’s practices of bundling following an interview with Frank Karlitschek.
  • Süddeutsche Zeitung Dossier published an article exploring the transition of Schleswig-Holstein state administration from Microsoft, featuring a conversation with Frank Karlitschek and Dirk Schrödter of Schleswig-Holstein.

Connecting globally, inspiring locally: 2024 events

Nextcloud Community Conference 2024

This September, we hosted our annual community gathering in Berlin once again. With attendance beating all the records, we certainly scaled up – and so did the program! Our guests – about 200 open-source enthusiasts, Nextcloud lovers, and team – were joined by speakers of a great caliber: computer scientist, author and spokeswoman of the Chaos Computer Club Constanze Kurz, and professor Björn Lundell, a researcher and Software Systems Research Group lead at the University of Skövde.

As always, Nextcloud Community Conference is a platform for our community to showcase their projects and discuss modern day wins and challenges of open-source! You can find the recordings of all the lightning talks in a dedicated YouTube playlist.

Nextcloud Enterprise Day in Paris, Munich and Frankfurt

Nextcloud Enterprise Day is gaining a momentum each year. Over two hundred enterprise and public decision makers attended our first event in Frankfurt in 2024. Featuring keynotes by leading voices across industries, product announcements and roadmap sneak peeks, and ample opportunities for networking and optimizing your platform, it provides a premier setting to explore and advance privacy, digital sovereignty, and digitalization. The success prompted us to organize two more events, in Munich and Paris.

This year, we hosted Nextcloud Enterprise Day in three cities:

Nextcloud Enterprise Day Munich

Nextcloud Enterprise Day Frankfurt

Nextcloud Enterprise Day Paris

Each year, Nextcloud Enterprise Day events grow in relevance among enterprise audiences, evident in rising attendance and enthusiasm. In 2025, we aim to amplify their impact by exploring new formats and locations.

Our event venue

Our venue MotionLab.Berlin is unique to say the least. The large industrial space of 1.500 sqm is full of inviting areas to work like spacious open spaces as well as many small nooks and corners to retreat to – including a renovated bus!

Regarding the hygience and safety, MotionLab.Berlin has all the mandatory protocols for upholding a safe environment, including first aid kits around the building and an in-house staff that keeps things running smoothly.

We thank you for your cooperation in being mindful of others to maintain a healthy and safe event.

We hope you enjoy this space and use it to your full advantage!

As for your contribution, we ask you to bring your old lanyard and/or Nextloud T-shirt from a previous event to help our cause. We hope to make the #NextcloudConf24 a sustainable and friendly environment for all so we can continue these events in the future responsibly.

Food & drinks

Every day of the conference there will be access to free water (regular and sparkling), soft drinks, tea, and coffee. The fridges will be re-stocked regularly so there won’t be any shortages!

In addition, a complimentary lunch is provided during the two days of the conference including vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free options. By registering for the event, you already filled out your dietary preferences. On Saturday for the party, we will provide pizza which will also have vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free options.

Breakfast, snacks and dinners (excluding Saturday night) are on the attendee.

Accessibility & inclusion

We are committed to #NextcloudConf24 being an accessible event to everyone who wants to participate.

The entire conference will be held in English, however there’s a good chance you will meet other people attending who speak your native language as we attract many international visitors.

The venue is completely barrier-free, wheelchair accessible and accessible for persons with disabilities. A quiet space will also be available where people can have a quiet moment if needed.

Photos and privacy

As every year, we will be taking photos and videos throughout the event purely for our marketing purposes i.e. photos for our website and a compilation video of the event. If you don’t want your photo taken or don’t want to be in a video, please let us know during your registration time.

At the Nextcloud Conference, we want everyone to feel part of the community and rest assured they are safe and feel heard. It’s a great time for unity and togetherness as we have fun, share ideas, learn and grow. Nextcloud Community Conference 2024 Building a safer digital world

At Nextcloud Community Conference, our community comes together to do more than networking, coding, and sharing the latest Nextcloud updates. We are united by one purpose, and that is to make this world a safer, more open and more inclusive space — on a digital level.

This year, Nextcloud Community Conference runs under the motto “Building a safer digital world”. For that’s what we do as Nextclouders!

Building a safer digital world 🌍

Imagine a world where big tech doesn’t track everything you do to sell you products you don’t need. Where surveillance is not a scary word and is actually there to protect you. Where citizens’ data stays at home, handled with transparency and by software they choose to trust.

Changing this reality must sound nearly impossible. But we believe that many drops make a bucket! Since day one, we stick to our core values and build accessible, decentralized, open-source products that put people back in control. Nextcloud’s mission has been an ongoing success thanks to our amazing diverse community.

At the Nextcloud Community Conference, we are going to celebrate our achievements and set new milestones to keep building a safer digital world together — by sharing ideas, telling stories, and mastering the craft of software that gives people their privacy back.

We are preparing an agenda full of inspiring topics and community activities. That includes keynotes by renowned privacy advocates, researchers, and writers, dynamic panel sessions, lightning talks by members of the Nextcloud community, and hands-on workshops led by our team and contributors.

Two keynotes already scheduled:

Nextcloud Community Conference 2024 speaker Constanze Kurz promo

Keynote by Dr. Constanze Kurz: Mass surveillance: The haystack has only grown bigger

Nextcloud Community Conference 2024 speaker Björn Lundell promo

Keynote by Professor Björn Lundell: Recipes for getting stuck in proprietary clouds: How public sector organisations discriminate against OSS solutions

Stay tuned for the upcoming program announcements and start planning your trip! Want to become a part of it? Read on to learn about speaking and volunteering at the Nextcloud Community Conference.

Be a part of it: join the stage!

Love privacy, open-source and all things Nextctcloud? Speak at the Nextcloud Comminity Conference! Everyone can apply until July 21 to present a 5-minute lightning talk or lead a 30-60 minute practical workshop. Find out more about speaking opportunities and submit your proposal below.

Learn, grow, and have fun: become a volunteer!

Want to help us organize Nextcloud Community Conference? We are calling for volunteers to work with us at the site and help with registrations, stage support, and other tasks. Every volunteer receives up to 80% of travel support to cover their transportation to and from the conference as well as the hotel stay in Berlin.

We’re consistently updating Nextcloud Calendar, a part of Nextcloud Groupware, to be intuitive, easy to use and full of rich features!

In this blog, we’ll go through all the engaging aspects about Nextcloud Calendar, but most importantly, we’ll guide you through how to set up meetings easily and effectively. Let’s get to it!

From the ✨ moment ✨ you open the app, you’re greeted with a visually appealing calendar that can be set by day, week, month, year or even in list form. You can have multiple calendars too, for all your teams and needs – which can be switched to in the left sidebar. It’s so easy to toggle between upcoming weeks and calendars so you can feel at ease when using it.

Scroll through Nextcoud Calendar in week, day, month, year and list form!

How to set up a meeting in Nextcloud Calendar

The simplest way to set up a meeting is to click directly on the date and time you want. Just click on an empty time slot and a pop-up window will appear.

Claim the title you want, adjust the time and specific calendar, add a location and a description about what will happen in the meeting. Next you’ll want to click on ‘More details.’

Here, you’ll be able to customize your meetings and most importantly, add the attendees. Add the users by name if they’re in your instance, by group or by email. If you want to extend an external invite, add the recipients email and they will receive the invitation. They will be able to click on the secure, public Talk link and join the meeting.

In our Nextcloud Hub 8 release, we made it simple to find a time that works for everyone, based on their availability and schedule. Just click ‘Find a time’ and a pop-up box will automatically suggest the next suitable time slot on the attendees availability. Voila!

You can even start a Nextcloud Talk chat here directly by clicking ‘Create Talk room for this event.’ This way, you can already start communication with your team and have the room ready to start the call.

Sound easy? We hope you find it so!

How to set up a meeting or event from Nextcloud Mail

Take the following scenario: You’re checking your emails in Nextcloud Mail and see an email from an important customer. They have several questions and want to set up a meeting asap. You don’t even need to open up your Calendar to set up the meeting because you can do it directly in the Nextcloud Mail app! Just click on:

The ‘3 dots’ icon ➡ ‘More actions’ ➡ ‘Create event.’

Automatically, and with the use of AI, a meeting is set up! Feel free to adjust the title, date/time and/or description, however it’s all generated for you. Click ‘Create’ and your meeting is set! Now, give yourself that *much deserved* coffee break! ☕

How to share and manage your Calendars

If you’ve read our blog about how Nextcloud is a single platform that integrates all apps, then you know how intuitive and versatile Nextcloud really is.

You can be in any one of our apps, say Nextcloud Talk, and you can share a calendar with a colleague directly in the chat so they can easily browse upcoming meetings or events, dates and schedules.

In fact, you can embed a whole, interactive calendar in a Text file, Collectives page or Deck card description too! Easily manage your calendar and have it viewable in the spaces its relevant for. And don’t worry, Nextcloud only shows the embedded calendar to users with access, while for others it will remain blank, respecting your right to privacy and control over your data.

Our interactive widgets provide a whole new way to collaborate and work efficiently.

Interactive widgets in Nextcloud Hub

Did you know Nextcloud Calendar has these features?

In our Nextcloud Hub 8 release, we announced some helpful, new features:

  • Default calendar picker for Calendar/CalDAV backend
  • Mail iCloud compatibility
  • Database cluster read/write split readiness for Calendar

All in all, Nextcloud Calendar enables more automation and comfort than ever before. We hope you learned how to properly set up a meeting in your Nextcloud Calendar or from Nextcloud Mail, how to share calendars and more!

Do you have any feedback about Nextcloud Calendar? Want to share your experience? We invite you to submit and share your review!

Happy Birthday Nextcloud - 8 years

Nextcloud turns 8 today! It is hard to believe that it has been that long — time flies when you’re having fun, they say.

We’ve achieved a ton in those 8 years, going from a small startup to a team well over 100, from the unknown to the leading on premise collaboration platform, from a file sync & share to a full-stack ecosystem, and so much more.

And in all that, we brought freedom and privacy to tens of millions of users and tens of thousands of businesses and local and federal government organizations. We are, of course, incredibly proud of that!

However, none of that would have been possible without the wholehearted support of our amazing community. From coders and designers to translators and testers – everybody is part of this success and we are grateful for your contributions. Together, we’re standing stronger against the Big Tech firms that aim to hoover up our data!

So, let’s reflect a bit today on what we achieved. And think of what we will be doing the coming years!

Frank & the Nextcloud team 💙

From a bright few to a global team of 100 🌳

In the beginning, Nextcloud was no more than a dozen of enthusiasts and engineers chasing a dream of a fair world where your data belongs to you. Today, we are a team of over 100 employees scattered over 20 countries, a contributing community of thousands, and a thriving ecosystem of partnerships. Nextcloud helps millions of users, thousands of organizations, on their journey to digital sovereignty and data privacy.

Celebrating our blossoming community 💙

Community is in the DNA of our project. It is the force behind the evolution of Nextcloud, its look and feel, and, of course, the global awareness. Numerous coders, designers, testers, writers, bloggers and users are shaping Nextcloud, and today the numbers make us beam with pride!

750k GitHub commits 🧑‍💻

60K forum members 🤓

>65k topics and >300k posts on the Nextcloud Community forum.

530 security experts thanked 🩺

550+ HackerOne reports resolved with average response time of 4 hours.

481 apps 🧩

Numerous new integrations submitted daily, ready to use in Nextcloud.

Championing privacy, transparency and responsibility 🌍

We are very proud to continue our organic growth, achieved in the most sustainable way with no external investors involved. Year after year, no stage of development shifts our focus from the values we’ve held since day one.

Nextcloud believes privacy is a fundamental human right, driving all our product development. We prioritize long-term stability over short-term gains. Our 100% open-source approach, adherence to open standards, diversity and decentralization empower our users to stay in control, in the most direct sense.

Powered by trust

To this day, Nextcloud has been deployed on countless machines, on the scale from a family server at home to multi-million-user setups leveraged by the biggest cloud providers. Cloud pioneers like América Móvil or Deutsche Telekom, government users like the German Federal Government and French Ministry of Internal Affairs, financial companies like Raiffeisen Informatik and Stadtsparkasse München, public radio and television, charities, international organizations like Amnesty International, and countless other teams regain control over their data with Nextcloud.

Looking back at our breakthroughs 💫

8 editions of Nextcloud Hub

A file sync and share service evolves into a comprehensive collaboration platform, integrating pioneering technologies within the most user-friendly and accessible package. Just over a month ago, we launched the 8th edition of Nextcloud Hub, our latest and greatest — Nextcloud Hub 8. What a lovely coincidence!
